Swedish Christmas Traditions

My Swedish Christmas Exploration features some of the country’s most enchanting, holiday season traditions during our first three days in Stockholm.  It all begins with a sumptuous, special Christmas feast, called Julbord where we’ll discover an incredible array of time-honored, special holiday foods. We’ll join locals to witness the candlelit Santa Lucia service in the iconic Stockholm Cathedral – bringing light to the darkest days of winter.  We’ll visit the enchanting Christmas markets to shop the beautiful hand-crafted items and Christmas foods.  With a city backdrop lit up by Christmas décor, we’ll learn about Swedish history, culture, legends and lore by visiting key attractions and unique museums.  Christmastime in Stockholm is the perfect place to take in time-honored Scandinavian traditions — doesn’t it sound magical?!?

An Extraordinary Hotel Made of Ice

After a few days of Christmas season festivities in Stockholm, we’ll fly north into the Arctic Circle and step into a true winter wonderland! We’ll visit the small town of Jukkasjärvi – founded as a Sami marketplace and named by the Northern Sami people to mean lake of assembly. Get ready for a spectacular experience as we check in and explore the world’s original, Icehotel  – truly one of the most unique, one-of-a-kind accommodations on the globe. You’ll marvel at the intricate sculptures and artistry of each room’s ice carvings.  Here in Lapland, we’ll introduce you to the ultimate healing traditions of Swedish culture both indoors and out.  With the Icehotel as our home base for a few days, we’ve arranged an incredible variety of outdoor adventures you will love!

Discover Peace and Adventure in the Arctic Wilderness

Get ready for outdoor adventure paired with the quiet pace of the north as the second part of our program takes us to Northern Swedish Lapland.  We’ll get outside to play and explore the magnificent, snow-covered hills and woods as meet local Sami people whose traditions of reindeer herding and honoring nature is the foundation of their indigenous Arctic culture.  Bundle up for dog sledding on a frozen river and driving a reindeer sleigh through wide-open countryside. Then come indoors to enjoy hearty, warm meals featuring local specialties. You’ll forever remember the quiet of wintry Polar nights, candles in the windowsills, and with luck—a glimpse of the Northern Lights!
